Our Town, Our People

Hampton is a charming, historically rich village in Clarington, Ontario, known for its tight-knit community, scenic surroundings, and deep roots dating back to the 1840s.

Here’s a closer look at what makes Hampton special:

Overview & Location

  • Hampton is an unincorporated community within the Municipality of Clarington, part of the Durham Region in Ontario.
  • It’s located just north of Lake Ontario, near the intersection of Taunton Road and Old Scugog Road, about 60 km east of Toronto.
Historical Roots
  • The village was founded in 1840 by Henry Elliot Sr., who purchased 65 wooded acres and built the first mill. Originally called Elliot’s Mill, it later became Millsville, and eventually Hampton, named after Elliot’s birthplace—Kirkhampton in Cornwall, England.
  • Hampton served as the administrative center for Darlington Township until 1974, when it was absorbed into the newly formed Town of Newcastle (now Clarington) during regional restructuring.
Community & Demographics
  • As of the 2021 Census, Hampton had a population of 775 residents living in 272 dwellings, with a population density of 630.1/km².
  • The Hampton Community Association (HCA) plays a central role in organizing events and managing the Hampton Community Centre, fostering a strong sense of local pride and connection.
Atmosphere & Identity
  • Hampton is described as a “Small Village, Big Hearts”—a peaceful enclave that blends historical charm with suburban tranquillity.
  • The village is surrounded by nature reserves, parks, and nearby hamlets like Tyrone, Solina, and Enniskillen, making it ideal for those who value quiet living with access to outdoor beauty.
Local Landmarks
  • The Hampton Post Office, established in 1851, has a storied history with several relocations and long-serving postmasters. Today, it continues to serve the village with lock boxes and rural routes.
  • Hampton Community Hall and Hampton Conservation Area are key gathering spots for residents and visitors alike.
If you’re drawn to places with deep heritage, a welcoming spirit, and a strong sense of community, Hampton is a gem worth exploring.
